Teaching Method: In-person at our Preston Training Academy

Assessment Method: Post course assignments will follow each unit.

Location: Preston

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, learners will:

  • Understand smoke control and exhaust ventilation systems.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of existing smoke control and exhaust ventilation systems.
  • Determine the mass flow of smoke and temperature in smoke layers.
  • Design a smoke control and an exhaust ventilation system.

Course Content

Over two days, learners will explore how smoke control and smoke clearance systems are designed to support the safe evacuation of buildings during a fire. The course will provide an understanding of system design intent and how different approaches can influence the movement of smoke and the conditions experienced by occupants.

Learners will work through the calculations and modelling techniques used to design effective smoke control systems, developing the confidence to apply these methods to buildings with different uses, layouts and occupancy characteristics.

Practical examples and case studies will bring the subject to life, including heritage buildings, large public spaces, basements and car parks. By the end of the course, learners will have a clearer understanding of the principles behind smoke control design and how these can be applied to real-world situations.

Who Should Attend?

This course is aimed at those who are entering the fire engineering profession and are working towards professional status. Also suitable for building control officers, approved inspectors, fire risk assessors, surveyors, architects and other fire safety professionals.

Entry Requirements

No formal entry requirements although a Level 04 or above qualification in a relevant subject would be advantageous. Learners must be proficient in the use of the English language.

Certification

ProQual Level 05 Award in Fire Engineering Design of Smoke Control and Ventilation Systems.

Progression

ProQual Level 05 Diploma in Fire Engineering Design.
