Level 05 Award in Fire Engineering Design

On successful completion of this course, learners will:

• Understand the psychological and physiological effects of fire on human behaviour.
• Understand how historic fire events have shaped knowledge of human behaviour.
• Understand how fire engineering design impacts on human behaviour and Safe Egress Time.

Learners will examine tenability and human survivability, including the effects of temperature, toxicity, oxygen levels and visibility on occupants and their ability to escape. Relevant guidance, including PD 7974, will be considered alongside case studies exploring the physical and psychological effects of fire.

The course will explore human behaviour and decision-making during evacuation, considering how occupants perceive risk, respond to social pressures and make decisions during an emergency. Learners will use evacuation modelling to consider pre-movement and response times, movement and travel times, exit routes, alarms, signage and emergency lighting. 

Using relevant case studies and scenario calculations, learners will apply these principles to realistic evacuation situations and gain an understanding of how different factors can influence occupant behaviour, evacuation performance and life safety.

This course is aimed at those who are entering the fire engineering profession and are working towards professional status. Also suitable for building control officers, approved inspectors, fire risk assessors, surveyors, architects and other fire safety professionals.

No formal entry requirements although a Level 04 or above qualification in a relevant subject would be advantageous. Learners must be proficient in the use of the English language.
