Level 05 Award in Fire Engineering Design

On successful completion of this course, learners will:

• Understand how fire engineering design impacts on the access and facilities for firefighting.
• Apply fire engineering design to the access and facility requirements for firefighting.

Learners will examine the functional requirements of the Building Regulations and Approved Document B, alongside BS 9999, BS 9991, BS 7974 and relevant national guidance. Topics will include vehicle and fire-fighter access, fire-fighting shafts, stairs and lifts, dry and wet risers, fire mains, water supplies, hydrants, communications, control centres and control systems.

Through practical case studies and simulations, learners will consider how these provisions work together within a building. The course will also consider practical fire-fighting requirements, including hose-laying distances, fire-fighting shafts and stairs, and fire-fighting lifts, helping learners understand how design decisions can affect fire-fighter operations.

By the end of the course, learners will have a stronger understanding of the principles and design considerations associated with fire-fighting facilities and greater confidence in applying relevant standards and guidance to realistic building scenarios.

This course is aimed at those who are entering the fire engineering profession and are working towards professional status. Also suitable for building control officers, approved inspectors, fire risk assessors, surveyors, architects and other fire safety professionals.

No formal entry requirements although a Level 04 or above qualification in a relevant subject would be advantageous. Learners must be proficient in the use of the English language.
