Level 05 Award in Fire Engineering Design

On successful completion of this course, learners will:

• Understand how fire engineering design impacts on the external spread of fire.
• Apply fire engineering design to the external spread of fire and meet functional needs.

Learners will explore the principles of radiation and heat transfer, including the terminology and calculations used to assess fire radiation. Topics will include the influence of cladding, shielding and occupancy, together with an introduction to how Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can support fire engineering analysis.

The course will also examine the functional requirements of Building Regulations and how these are addressed through relevant guidance and standards. This will include Approved Document B and its UK equivalents, together with BS 9999, BS 9991, BS 7974 and BR 187, or other relevant national guidance where appropriate.

Through a series of practical case studies, learners will explore how these requirements and design principles are applied to different building types and façade configurations. The case studies will provide opportunities to consider the interaction between building design, fire spread, radiation and regulatory requirements. Learners will gain a stronger understanding of the principles underpinning external fire spread assessments and greater confidence in interpreting plans, applying calculations and using relevant standards and guidance to support fire safety design decisions.

This course is aimed at those who are entering the fire engineering profession and are working towards professional status. Also suitable for building control officers, approved inspectors, fire risk assessors, surveyors, architects and other fire safety professionals.

No formal entry requirements although a Level 04 or above qualification in a relevant subject would be advantageous. Learners must be proficient in the use of the English language.
